3-4 more being tested for measles after last week's confirmed case - Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette

Other Related Content CHAMPAIGN — Three or four people are being tested for measles after an unidentified person was diagnosed with the highly contagious disease last week, according to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. The people have symptoms, or were unvaccinated and possibly exposed to the initial patient, said Julie Pryde, the health district's administrator. "Hopefully, by tomorrow we should know" if they tested positive, Pryde said Monday. The initial patient appears to have been a University of Illinois student or had some connection to the university, having spent time in the last couple weeks at various buildings on campus, and at the Texas Roadhouse in west Champaign. The UI sent a mass email about the local measles case, saying the McKinley Health Center is working with the health district to identify at-risk individuals. "We're following up with all the contacts who have been exposed, and if the person was exposed to measles

Washington Declares State of Emergency Due to Measles Outbreak - KTLA Los Angeles

As of Saturday, there are 32 confirmed cases of measles in Washington — an outbreak that has already prompted Gov. Jay Inslee to declare a state of emergency. “Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be fatal in small children,” Inslee said in his proclamation Friday, adding that these cases create “an extreme public health risk that may quickly spread to other counties.” A doctor’s assistant brings a tray with a vaccine against measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox prior to the vaccination of an infant on February 26, 2015 in Berlin, Germany. Of the 31 cases, 21 are children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old. There is also one case in King County , which includes Seattle. While the King County website says the man in his 50s is a “suspected case,” the gov

Ask the doctors: Readers respond - The Spokesman-Review

Hello again, dear readers! We hope that amid the rush (and, let’s face it, occasional stress) of the holidays, you were able to enjoy the season. We thank you for making the time to keep our mailboxes full. We will get right down to business. In addressing the potential dangers of recent outbreaks of measles, mumps and chicken pox, we touched on the need to stay current with vaccines. Several of you wondered if, after initial completion of all early childhood vaccinations, follow-up vaccinations are actually necessary. The answer is emphatically yes. A child’s immune system is not fully developed, and vaccination schedules are structured to address that. When subsequent boosters are called for, it’s because they are needed to confer full protective immunity. If your family has fallen behind on vaccinations, get in touch with your family doctor. He or she will be glad to help you get back on schedule. Another extremely popular topic in our mailbox, likely in response to all the cooki

No new mumps cases in Bozeman since last small outbreak - KBZK Bozeman News

Image
[embedded content] BOZEMAN, Mont. – Last month we reported on a cluster of mumps cases in Gallatin County. It now appears the small outbreak is contained. The first case was reported in a student at Morning Star Elementary School in Bozeman. Officials confirmed a total of four cases. We are now past the 25-day incubation period of the last known exposure. Gallatin City-County Health Department Officer Matt Kelley says while he’s still cautiously optimistic there won’t be more cases, he says it’s a testament to teamwork. “There was some disruption involved in this. But the parents, staff, the educators, the principal were all really great in helping us put in place the control mechanisms we know prevent spread of the disease. The good news is we haven’t had additional cases,” Kelley said. Kelley also says the fact that there haven’t been any new cases is also a testament to the effectiveness of the vaccine. http://bit.ly/2HvV30V

Officials in anti-vaccination ‘hotspot’ near Portland declare an emergency over measles outbreak - The Washington Post

Image
January 23 at 5:24 AM A quickly escalating measles outbreak around Portland, Ore., has led health officials in nearby Clark County, Wash., to declare a public health emergency as they warn that people infected with the highly contagious virus have visited schools and churches, a dentist’s office, a Costco, an Ikea and an Amazon locker pickup station. Someone with measles was at Concourse D of the Portland International Airport on Jan. 7, the county’s public health department advised . An infected person attended a Portland Trail Blazers home game Jan. 11. At the beginning of last week, there were only a handful of confirmed cases . On Friday, the day the emergency was declared , there were 19. By Sunday, that number had grown to 21. The latest update came Tuesday, when county officials said they had confirmed 23 cases and were investigating two more suspected cases. The vast majority of those who have fallen ill had not been immunized. The outbreak makes concrete the fear of ped

Vaccine skeptics on MN Autism Council touch off debate - Star Tribune

Image
Autism activists are concerned that the appointment of vaccine skeptics to a newly formed state council gives credibility to views the state has struggled to dispel. The MN Autism Council was formed last fall by Sen. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, to discuss autism and advise the Legislature on public policy. Abeler said he wants the group to represent diverse viewpoints and said it will be focused on issues like housing, employment and education, not vaccines. But some advocates take issue with having people who have vaccine concerns on the council. Anti-vaccination groups have focused on Minnesota's Somali-American community in the past as they tried to perpetuate the hoax that vaccines cause autism, contributing to a drop in vaccinations and the largest measles outbreak in the state's recent history in 2017. "Even if it's not something that's discussed or that a policy is going to come out of, giving them this large contingency on this council is dangerous. It's

Measles: two US outbreaks are blamed on low vaccination rates - The BMJ

Image
Please allow me to make a few corrections and add context to Ms. Tanne's article. Endemic measles has been eradicated from the US and the whole of the western hemisphere, per the WHO.(1) It does not continually recirculate. But cases are brought into the US, or rarely occur as a clinical response to measles vaccination, (2) multiple times each year. (3) The US averages about 250 reported cases annually. There have been only 3 deaths from measles in the US since 2000: one in a 75 year old male who was exposed in Israel; one in a 13 year old immunosuppressed male who had received a bone marrow transplant 3 months premortem, who lacked any identified exposure to a measles case; and one in an immunosuppressed woman with multiple comorbidities. Whether any of these deaths was caused by a vaccine strain is unknown, but since vaccine strain measles can be virulent in an immunocompromised host, it is possible. (2) There are approximately 2500 mumps cases yearly in the US, but no recent

ALLOWING pharmacists to administer vaccines for diseases including measles and mumps is a healthy move, according to Krysti-Lee Rigby. Ms Rigby is the pharmacist in charge at Moodies Pharmacy and the vice president of the NSW Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. “The NSW legislation has been changed to allow pharmacists to provide their MMR vaccines – measles, mumps, rubella – and the pertussis, or whooping cough, vaccine,” she said. “We [pharmacists] can provide that to patients over the age of 16 in our pharmacies as of January 1.” The change brings NSW in line with other states, Ms Rigby said. “Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania already provide vaccination services for those over 16 for those particular diseases, so NSW is really catching up,” she said. Measles Outbreaks Are Increasing Worldwide - Pharmacy Times

Measles outbreaks are on the rise globally, and it is considered a public health crisis. In the United States, there were 349 confirmed measles cases in 26 states and the District of Columbia in 2018, which is the second largest number since measles was eliminated in the US in 2000. 1   Measles is still common in some countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. The rise in outbreaks is most likely due to an increase in the amount of travelers infected with measles and unvaccinated individuals in the US, who are spreading the disease. 1  New York has seen one of the largest measles outbreaks in decades, which is primarily occurring among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities. 1,2  The outbreaks were associated with travelers who brought measles back from Israel, where a large outbreak is occurring. 2  The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has also issued a recent warning regarding an individual infected with measles that visited various locations. 3 Me
