Heavy lobbying defeats Colorado physician assistant bill, critics say - The Colorado Sun

Image
Colorado state representatives and staff mingle in the Colorado Capitol's House chambers during the first day of Colorado's special legislative session on Monday, Nov. 30, 2020. (Andy Colwell, Special to The Colorado Sun) Heavy lobbying from well-funded medical groups hastened the dramatic defeat this month of a bipartisan bill that would have eased regulations on physician assistants in Colorado, proponents of the legislation say.  House Bill 1095 would have let physician assistants practice with less oversight from doctors, which the bill's sponsors said would help increase access to health care for people living in rural and underserved communities.  The measure appeared on its way to final House approval when it was defeated in a 35-28 vote. Opponents, including the two House members who work in medicine, argued the bill would leave patients with a poorer quality of care and could create departments entirely staffed by physician assistants.

Rogan responds to Spotify protest, COVID advisories - CBS 46 News

Image
NEW YORK (AP) — Following protests of Spotify kicked off by Neil Young over the spread of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, the music streaming service said that it will add content advisories before podcasts discussing the virus. In a post Sunday, Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek laid out more transparent platform rules given the backlash stirred by Young, who on Wednesday had his music removed from Spotify after the tech giant declined to get rid of episodes of "The Joe Rogan Experience," which has been criticized for spreading virus misinformation. "Personally, there are plenty of individuals and views on Spotify that I disagree with strongly," wrote Ek. "It is important to me that we don't take on the position of being content censor while also making sure that there are rules in place and consequences for those who violate them." Ek said that the advisories will link to Spotify's fact-based COVID-19 hub in what he described as a "new effo

Schistosomiasis and Hookworm: Eastern Uganda's Neglected Tropical Diseases - Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting

Reporting Fellows Holly Lam and Uma Paithankar conduct a focus group discussion with Village Health Team members from Bulondo and Ngereka. Image courtesy of Nicholas Slimmon. Uganda, 2021. Sitting in a line, six Village Health Team members (VHTs) across two neighboring Ugandan villages, Bulondo and Ngereka, speak about common helminth infections, or parasitic worm infections, in their region. The health workers explain how common these infections are and how difficult they are to prevent. They also list treatments, ranging from medications to traditional healing remedies, including herbs and urine. However, many factors keep these infections, mainly hookworm and schistosomiasis, from being eradicated. Helminth infections are a set of severely under-researched neglected tropical diseases, even though they contribute to the deaths of more than 150,000 people every year. Today, it is estimated that approximately a third of the nearly three billion people who live on less than $2.00 pe

Managed Care Rediscovered | MedPage Today - Medpage Today

Image
For 2 years, the health system has grappled with depleted resources and previously unimaginable challenges that magnified longstanding shortcomings. Hospital revenues plummeted, "burnout" and resignations among healthcare professionals soared, and the health of the population suffered. But even in the face of overwhelming obstacles, "American ingenuity" hasn't waned. Authors of a recent article observed that although the profitability of the industry over the next few years is uncertain, there is substantial opportunity -- and pressing need -- for innovation in healthcare. They go on to describe emerging business models that show real promise in terms of providing higher quality, more accessible care at a lower cost. The new, innovative models that are generating better returns for payers are those that incorporate care delivery and advanced analytics to better serve individuals with complex healthcare needs (i.e., chronic disease and long-term conditions

Vaccination after COVID-19 hospital stay may protect against long COVID A study yesterday in Clinical Microbiology and Infection suggests that natural infection, but not immunity acquired from COVID-19 vaccinations, is linked to the development of long COVID-19, or symptoms that persist up to a year after acute infection. The prospective study was based on 479 COVID-19 patients originally seen at the Udine Hospital in Italy from March to May 2020. Researchers conducted interviews 6 and 12 months after acute infection, and vaccination status was obtained, as vaccines had become available in the interim. The investigators also obtained two different serologic assays to distinguish between response to vaccination (receptor-binding domain [RBD] SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G [IgG]) and to natural infection (non-RBD- SARS-CoV-2 IgG). Of the participants, 47.2% experienced COVID-19 symptoms 1 year after infection, including 85 (30.6%) who reported the onset of new post-COVID-19 symptoms at 12&a

Staph scalded skin syndrome: Causes, treatments, and more - Medical News Today

Image
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) occurs as a result of some Staphylococcus (staph) infections. It produces discolored and blistered patches of skin that slough off. These patches can resemble a burn. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), also known as Ritter's disease, often begins with fever and flushing of the skin, which advances to the formation of easily ruptured blisters. The top layer of skin may start to peel, leaving behind discolored, moist skin. SSSS is most common in infants and children, but it can affect adults who have advanced renal disease or a compromised immune system. This article explores SSSS in more detail, including the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and possible complications. It also looks at how to prevent and treat the condition. SSSS develops as the result of a toxin that the staphylococcal bacteria produce. It causes fever and flu-like symptoms, along with flushing of the skin and the development of blisters. The top layer of skin will

Fungal Culture Test: Uses, Procedure, Results - Verywell Health

Image
A fungal culture test is a gold standard when it comes to diagnosing a fungal infection. There are millions of types of fungi, but only certain varieties can cause infections in people. Fungi can include molds and yeasts, many of which occur naturally in and on the human body. There are some situations, like a weakened immune system, that could lead to an overgrowth of these fungi. When this happens, you can develop superficial infections on your skin or nails, or even a systemic infection that can affect your entire body. This article will review what types of fungi cause infections, what those infections might look like, and how a fungal infection is diagnosed. Mr. Yu / Getty What Are Fungal Infections? Fungi are everywhere around us—in the air we breathe, in the soil, and even in our own skin. There are many types of fungi, including molds, yeasts, and even mushrooms. Some of these fungi are useful, but about half of them can cause disease in
