Wind Chills Stay Cold For Another 24 Hours Before A Brief Warm-up

Tuesday morning started out with a fresh dusting of snow with some communities even picking up a few tenths of an inch. Most of the snow stayed in our southern half of counties mainly along and south of I-94. Milwaukee officially picked up 0.3" of snow at the airport and some communities near the IL border could have seen a full half inch. That snow has now wrapped up as of the Tuesday morning commute, but expect some slippery and slow roads here and there.

The clouds and some of the snow kept temps in check a little Monday night but they dropped as the clouds clear Tuesday morning. Wind chills are still staying cold in the single digits and teens below-zero.

Here's a look at current wind chills that will update with time:

A cold weather advisory remains in effect for Fond du Lac, Dodge and Washington Counties until 9 AM for the possibility of wind chills around or colder than -20.

High temperatures Tuesday stay cold in the teens then warm to more of a normal chill in the 20s. Thursday and Friday warm nicely into the mid to upper 30s then we start to drop back down on Saturday.

The wind stays breezy the next few days with wind gusts to 20 mph Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Just enough wind for us to see wind chills stay below-zero most of the day Tuesday and through Wednesday morning when they could get as cold as -10. By Wednesday afternoon the wind chills warm into the single digits to around 10 degrees above-zero. By Thursday we get back to normal wind chills for this time of year.

Snow, Sub-zero Wind Chills To Hit Southeast Michigan Ahead Of Arctic Outbreak Next Week

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for southeast Michigan, as the area will see more scattered snow and cold temperatures this week, according to the National Weather Service's White Lake office.

Scattered to numerous lake-effect snow showers are expected through Tuesday afternoon, with accumulations of a half-inch to 2 inches possible across metro Detroit, said NWS meteorologist Alex Manion.

Most of the snowfall is expected between 5 a.M. And noon Tuesday, according to the NWS. Localized accumulations of 1-3 inches are predicted along and between the I-69 and I-94 corridors.

The NWS warns of wind chill readings between -5 and 5 degrees on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Residents are advised to limit their time outdoors and dress in layers to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

More: Lake effect snow, below-zero wind chills on the way this week in Michigan. Here's where

Tuesday's highs will range from 18 to 21 degrees, with lows between 12 and 16 degrees.

Wednesday will start sunny, with clouds increasing later. Highs could reach about 26 degrees and lows will range from 8 to 16 degrees.

There is a 20% chance for snow showers on Thursday, but not enough to accumulate, Manion told the Free Press. The next chance for precipitation will come Friday night into Saturday morning; temperatures may remain warm enough for rain or a mix of snow and rain.

The coldest air mass of the season thus far is likely to arrive next Monday, bringing even colder conditions, according to the NWS. Scattered lake-effect snow is possible.

"Monday morning, we're forecasting lows about 5 degrees. With the wind chills, it's going to feel more like in the negative single digits, anywhere between -1 to -4 degrees," Manion said. "Monday afternoon, we're not really going to warm up too well."

Monday afternoon's forecast shows highs between 12 and 14 degrees, with wind gusts of 15 to 20 mph. Wind chills are expected to make it feel closer to zero degrees."Tuesday morning, we are forecasting lows to drop to about zero degrees for the Detroit area," Manion added.

Take winter precautions seriously, especially if you'll be outdoors or traveling.

"The lower the wind chills, the quicker it takes to get frostbite or hypothermia, so take the usual precautions and layer up," Manion said. "If you're driving, it's always good to have the precautionaries in the absolute worst-case scenario: blankets, extra clothes, batteries, flashlights and other necessities if anything happens and you're stalled out in the road with no heat in your car."
