For many years, smallpox was killing millions of people every year. As recent as 1967, it continued to infect 15 million people within a year. This killer disease was indeed a threat to human existence. Fortunately, we had a genius like Edward Jenner who successfully introduced vaccination to control various dangerous infections. Smallpox eradication is a landmark victory for mankind. We have successfully thwarted the continuous march of a dangerous killer that could exterminate the entire human race. Such is the power of vaccination in the control of infection. Vaccine is the technology that produces the greatest impact on mankind. Measles Vaccination: Current Targets May Not Be Enough To Accomplish Elimination - Technology Networks

**Note: the release below is a special early release from the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022, Lisbon, 23-26 April ) .  Please credit the congress if you use this story ** New research, to be presented at this year's European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Lisbon, Portugal (23-26 April), suggests that the current two-dose measles immunisation coverage target of 95% may be the absolute minimum required to provide enough protective immunity in the population to achieve and maintain measles elimination. The systematic review and meta-analysis examining the effectiveness of two doses of the measles vaccine in over 7,000 participants (aged 9 months to 23 years) from 13 countries [1] is by Lukas Hemmers from the State Office for Health and Social Affairs in Berlin, Germany, and colleagues. According to the latest published figures from 2018 [2], only six countries in the EU/EEG (Cr...

no of people died in spanish flu :: Article Creator Worldwide Flu Pandemic Strikes Worldwide flu pandemic strikes1918 - 1919 Late in the spring of 1918 the Spanish wire service Agencia Fabra sent cables of an unusual nature to Reuter's news service headquarters in London. "A strange form of disease of epidemic character has appeared in Madrid," it said. "The epidemic is of a mild nature, no deaths having been reported." The illness began with a cough, then headache and backache, fatigue, high fever, racing heart, loss of appetite and labored breathing. It usually lasted about three days. Cases had cropped up over the spring and summer in other countries, too, from Norway to India, China to Costa Rica. But in Spain, suddenly 8 million people were down with the bug. And as the summer of 1918 turned to fall, the epidemic lost its mildness: people started to die. The influenza commonly called "Spanish flu" killed mo...

[+] a news conference by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (AP Photo/Reed Saxon) Copyright 2010 AP. All rights reserved. Pertussis (whooping cough) has surged this year, particularly during the back-to-school period, as my colleague Joshua Cohen noted last month. A few cases have recently been found near me in Frostburg, MD, involving two confirmed cases in students and three strongly suspected cases in household members. Surprisingly, in my 40 years of practice, I never saw a case of that, diphtheria, or measles, although I saw a number of uncommon infections. Those included two memorable and fatal cases of tetanus, which is also vaccine preventable. Thinking back prompted me to wonder more about the role of vaccination in preventin...
