MUMBAI: Special corners to screen people for non-communicable diseases ( NCD ), particularly diabetes and hypertension , will spring up at 16 municipal hospitals shortly. It can be regarded as one of the first concerted efforts in the city's public sector to bring down deaths due to such non-communicable diseases. A white paper by NGO Praja Foundation on Mumbai's health status recently revealed that deaths linked to diabetes and hypertension rose by 530% and 33% between 2015 and 2020. The report based on BMC data underlined that while fatalities due to infectious diseases are declining, NCDs have taken their place as top killers over the years. Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) We have a dedicated global health organisation with two R&D centres, in Siena, Italy and Tres Cantos, Spain, researching potential solutions for NTDs. Our scientists are looking at a range of diseases across invasive nontyphoidal salmonella, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, and Group A streptococcus, visceral leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, lymphatic filariasis, soil-transmitted parasites and dengue fever. We're also working in close collaboration with leading research institutes and partners to seek solutions to help end the epidemics of tuberculosis, malaria and HIV, for which we have a range of vaccines and medicines.
