US approves MeMed test to distinguish bacterial from viral infections - Verdict Medical Devices - Medical Device Network

Image
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a test developed by Israeli medtech firm MeMed that can rapidly determine whether an infection has been caused by a bacteria or a virus. The MeMed BV test, which was developed by MeMed using a $30m grant from the EU and US Department of Defense, does not directly detect the cause of an infection. Instead, it analyses three host response proteins – TRAIL, IP-10, and CRP – that show up in a patient's blood at very different levels depending on whether the immune system is fighting off a virus or bacteria. The test, which has received 501(k) clearance, delivers results in 15 minutes. The clearance was based on a multi-centre blinded clinical validation study enrolling over 1,000 childre...

Under pressure, U.S. donates half billion more COVID-19 vaccine doses to world - Reuters

Image
WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday promised to buy 500 million more COVID-19 vaccine doses to donate to other countries as it comes under increasing pressure to share its supply with the rest of the world. President Joe Biden made the announcement during a virtual summit aimed at boosting global vaccination rates against the coronavirus and rallying world leaders to do more. "To beat the pandemic here we need to beat it everywhere," Biden said as he kicked off the summit, which included leaders from Britain, Canada, Indonesia and South Africa as well as World Health Organization head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. "This is an all hands on deck crisis," Biden said of the pandemic that has raged since early 2020, killing more than 4,900,000 people. The additional vaccines will bring U.S. donations to more than 1.1 billion doses, far short of the 5 billion to 6 billion doses global health experts say is needed by poorer countries. FACT SHEET: How the Build Back Better Framework Will Support the Sandwich Generation - Whitehouse.gov

Image
Too many Americans struggle with the high costs of raising children, caring for a sick family member, providing long-term care for people with disabilities or older adults, and addressing the myriad other caregiving challenges.  These pressures are particularly acute for those with multiple caregiving responsibilities.  As of 2018, more than one-in-ten parents (12 percent, or over 8 million parents) had a child under 18 in the home and were providing unpaid care to an adult, making them part of the "sandwich generation."  This work is especially likely to fall on women, as 5 million mothers are part of the sandwich generation, compared to 3.2 million fathers.  Three-quarters of these mothers are employed, and more than half work full-time, making their schedules especially hard-stretched.  These millions of sandwich generation adults are caring for multiple generations of family members with few or no formal support, leading them t...
